3 out of 5 stars MMA Arcade Style   August 10, 2010
D. Alexander
Whilst the current crop of UFC games aim to provide a realistic take on MMA, Throwdown is a very different beast. Although populated by actual fighters boasting genuine martial art credentials Throwdown's gameplay is extremely arcadey (sp?), and is far more reminiscent of virtua fighter than undisputed.
Time elapses faster than real life and stamina/life bars, intricate combos and split second counters form the guts of the gameplay.
Grappling and the ground game does go a little way to differentiate it from other arcade fighters, but it feels underdeveloped and the outcome of submissions seems almost random.
The game features the pretty standard "Arcade", "Tournement" and "Title" modes. There's also "Legend" which is "Title" mode but harder and "Career" mode in which you create a fighter from very, very generic templates and fight a long, long list of computer characters to boost your stats.
If you're thinking of purchasing this as a cheap alternative to UFC Undisputed you may want to think again. However if you like fast paced, shallow fighters to play with your mates it's a lot of fun. It's different enough to set it apart, and if you've any interest in MMA from way back when there's plenty of names and match-ups to keep you amused: Marco Ruas vs Jens Pulver anyone?

3 out of 5 stars lets get it on, on and on again....   March 26, 2003
Manages to bring the atmosphere of the UFC to your livingroom. Very well presented - the music is good and builds the hype, the graphics are much better than other formats, there are a number of modes: legend, chamopinship, exhibition, career, and training etc. The career mode will absorb most people - creating your own fighter from a reasonably good set of skins, voices, attributes and fighting styles to take them up the ladder and becopme the best. I know it hooked myself and my housemates for several hours. But this is probably where it gets let down: its one of those games you will spend hours on in one go and then not play for a long time after. The reason? There is a huge sense of repetativeness after a while: this is not to say that surprises dont happen, but by and large, once you have created a 'maxed' out fighter, it seems difficult to be beaten. Furthermore, considering that the UFC is meant to showcase the martial arts, you get the feeling that the individuality of the styles is kind of missing - admittedly as anyone who has seen a UFC fight will testify, winning generally is not achieved through 'style', rather through the fighters own lust to win which results in a cacophany of takedowns and not much, as I have said, 'style'. So, in that sense the game pulls off the realism factor nicely. Its the best realistic fighting game on the gamecube at the moment, but could be better - its short term enjoyment is overshadowded by the long term lack of luster.
